Typical day in my life and my immersion environment

June 19, 2011

Today’s post will be about how my typical day usually goes. I was planning to draw up some circle to illustrate this but that didn’t prove to be successful^^” Instead I’ll just type it out like a timetable.

For the whole day - Japanese is always playing in the background (unless internet disconnects and what not)

From when I wake up – 3 : 30 pm – Reading manga, playing games, review of SRS (sentences, Kanji), browse web

3 30 pm – 6:00 pm or 9:00pm - SilverSpoon (some days there are more activities to do than others, so it varies) , reading manga, games, relaxing

10:00pm until I sleep - More anime, drama, read manga

When I’m sleeping, I also have earphones  in my ears playing Japanese (podcasts mainly)

Eating - Earphoness in one ear

Showering- I use my old ipod touch as speakers to play music^^”

Since I’m on holidays, I can stay immersed in Japanese practically for the whole day. Although the days where I have to go out, I use my trusty Ipod to keep up my Japanese environment. You’re probably thinking, I’m lazy and just having fun everyday^^”! (which is true on the most part!) As I try my best to stay immersed for the whole day, there are times when either the internet disconnects or I am busy doing something and Japanese just happens to stop playing. This usually equals to about half and hr + a day of loss Japanese. I know some people have commitments such as work , school, etc and cannot stay immersed for the whole day. But even if you happen to listen to 1 minute of Japanese, 2hrs + a day, it’s better than nothing!

Also,

Today, I’ve  decided to start plastering my walls with Japanese content (mainly manga, as I still don’t have a working printer to print things off the web^^”). I really should of done this a while ago but never really decided to bother doing it (I blame my lazy self!). I haven’t finished setting up my environment, it’s barely complete. I only plaster things which I find amusing and interesting. As you can see from the pictures, most of them are humorous ones^^” This idea is from reading AJATT’s post on setting up your environment and also from SilverSpoon.

For Japanese learners out there, do you plaster your walls with Japanese and try to immerse yourself in Japanese 24/7?

P.S. If you’re interested in what mangas are up there, it’s Beelzebub, Sket Dance, Bleach and I don’t know the other one^^” but it was humorous. These are all from Shounen Jump, that my friend got for me in Japan (which I’m really thankful for)

As always, feel free to ask questions~

seriously!? XD That sounds just like a great day I mean it. You are more serious about that SS than I initially thought :) The info of eating with your headphones in your ears, surprised me a bit. Well since I have the special talent choke myself on food when im distracted too much.
Btw what games are you playing for the immersion :p ?

Thx for this interesting post, keep it up .

Whenever I leave my iPod on (with headphones) over the night, I always wake up feeling tired in the morning. So I kine of stopped leaving the iPod on while lying in bed.

Also, don’t you mean earphones xD?

    • June 21, 2011 12:01 am

Ah I see. For me, I don’t feel tired (strange^^”)

Yeh, earphones XD! will change it now and thanks!. No wonder it sounded a bit odd. I do feel that my english is getting much worst lately^^” (not that it was good to start with)

I have a question I have not finished RTK but i kind of want to start learning do you think i should start sentences? What did you do?

    • June 23, 2011 11:08 am

Well most people tell you to finish RTK before sentences. How far in are you on RTK?
Ultimately the decision is yours, if you’re finding RTK too boring, you can do sentences to help cure that boredom. Idk the implications of doing sentences before RTK^^”
So at the end of the day, it’s up to you, you don’t have to listen when people say “finish RTK before sentences”

To answer your question I am about 1205 kanji in

    • June 23, 2011 2:50 pm

I see. Honestly, it’s up to you. If you feel bored, start on sentences. That might help cure your boredom;) But why not continue your kanji and just play games, read japanese manga, watch anime, drama.

Timeboxing also helps with Kanji boredom. For example, Add XX kanji per day then take a 1-2hr break (up to you) then do 3-5 mins of reps, take a break.
